The 7 mistakes that cost Leaving Cert maths students most

The marks lost in Leaving Cert maths rarely come from hard material. Examiner reports keep flagging the same technique failures: working not written down, rounding too early, sign errors, misread questions, time wasted on one part and blind trust in the calculator. Every one of them is fixable with a habit, not with more talent.

Ask anyone who corrects maths exams what separates grades and they will not talk about genius. They will talk about the same handful of self-inflicted wounds, year after year. None of these require more ability to fix. They require a habit, practised until June makes it automatic.

1. Working that exists only in your head

Maths marking rewards method line by line. When you do three steps mentally and write only the answer, a single slip erases everything, because there is no visible method left to credit. The fix is mechanical: one operation, one line. It feels slow; it is actually insurance. This matters double on long questions, where the final answer might be wrong but ninety percent of the marks sit in the journey.

2. Rounding before the end

The sneakiest mark-loser in the subject. You round a middle value to two decimals, carry it forward, and the final answer drifts just outside the accepted range. Keep every digit in the calculator until the last line, then round once, to the accuracy the question asks for. And read what that accuracy is: decimal places and significant figures are not the same request.

3. The minus sign that never survives the brackets

Sign errors are the classic algebra slip: a minus distributed through brackets and lost halfway, or both solutions of a quadratic written with the same sign. When an answer feels wrong, scan the minus signs first; that is where the crime scene usually is. Slow, deliberate expansion of brackets costs seconds and saves questions.

4. Answering the question you expected

Under pressure, people read the first line, recognise the topic, and start solving the question they practised instead of the one in front of them. Then "find the value of k for which..." becomes "solve...", and correct maths earns nothing because it answers nothing. Underline what is actually being asked. If a part says "hence", it is telling you to use the previous answer; ignoring that word is a signpost missed.

5. Units, form and the last line

The answer is 42, but 42 what? Euro, metres, square metres? Given to the wrong form (a decimal where a fraction was demanded), or left as an unfinished expression? These are marks lost after all the thinking was done, which makes them the most painful kind. Build a two-second finishing ritual: unit, form, accuracy, box it.

6. Sieging one question while the paper burns

Every June someone spends twenty-five minutes on a part worth ten marks and then sprints through fifty marks of questions they knew. The paper gives you about 30 seconds per mark, so a question has a price, and stubbornness pays it with interest. 7. Trusting the calculator more than your own eyes

The calculator is only as right as what you typed. A slipped digit, a missing bracket, or degree mode when you needed radians produces a confident nonsense answer. Write down what you are about to type, then type it; sanity-check the result against rough estimation. And know your machine before exam day, because the calculator rules and habits are their own small subject.

The common thread

Every one of these is a habit problem, and habits are built in practice, not on the day. That is the real argument for short daily revision built around doing questions: each practice question is one more rep of writing working, rounding late, checking signs and finishing properly, until the exam version of you does it without thinking.

The point (2, 4) lies on the circle x² + y² = 20. The equation of the tangent to the circle at (2, 4) is:

The radius from the centre (0, 0) to (2, 4) has slope 4/2 = 2, and the tangent is perpendicular to the radius, so its slope is -1/2. Then y - 4 = -1/2(x - 2) rearranges to x + 2y - 10 = 0. Option a is the line of the radius itself, not the tangent.

Solve 2cos²x + 3cos x - 2 = 0 for 0° ≤ x ≤ 360°.

Treat it as a quadratic in cos x: (2cos x - 1)(cos x + 2) = 0, so cos x = 1/2 or cos x = -2. Since cos x = -2 is impossible, only cos x = 1/2 remains, giving x = 60° and x = 360° - 60° = 300°. Forgetting the second quadrant-mirror solution gives 60° only.

The line 3x + 4y + k = 0 is a tangent to the circle x² + y² = 4. The possible values of k are:

A line is tangent to a circle when its perpendicular distance from the centre equals the radius. The centre is (0, 0) and r = 2, so |k|/√(3² + 4²) = |k|/5 = 2, giving |k| = 10 and k = ±10. Forgetting that both signs work loses the second tangent on the other side of the circle.
