What we are building, who builds it, and the rules we hold ourselves to.
H1 Owl is a study app for Leaving Certificate Mathematics, made for students sitting the exam at Higher or Ordinary Level. It turns the syllabus into something you can see: five strands, each split into small skills, each skill drilled with short questions that explain the answer instead of only marking it right or wrong. Questions you get wrong come back until they stick, and mini-mocks give you an estimated grade so you know where you stand long before the real mocks tell you.
It is built for the student doing fifteen minutes on the bus, not for someone with a free afternoon. That one constraint decides most of the design.
H1 Owl is built by elvxdev, an independent app studio. There is no publisher behind it and no school attached to it. It means we can move quickly and answer our own email, and it also means we are careful about what we claim.
Every practice question in H1 Owl is original. Questions are written from the publicly published syllabus, following the topics and the depth each strand sets out. Nothing is copied, transcribed or reworded from State Examinations Commission exam papers or marking schemes.
Grade estimates in the app are indicative. They are our own model of how a set of answers maps onto a grade band. They are not official, they are not endorsed by anyone, and they are not a prediction of your result. Treat an estimate the way you would treat a mock: useful feedback about weak spots, nothing more.
The blog answers the questions students actually search for: how the bonus points work, what sits on each paper, what happens if you fail maths. Every number in an article is checked against its source before it goes up, including the CAO common points scale, the 25 bonus points and the conditions that earn them, and the dates of the syllabus reform. Articles get updated when the facts change instead of being left to quietly go out of date. If you spot something wrong, tell us and we will fix it.
The CAO points calculator follows the same rule. It applies the published common points scale and the Maths bonus, counts your best six, and says plainly what it does not cover.
We are not affiliated with the State Examinations Commission, the NCCA or the CAO, and nothing here is official examination material. We are not a school, a grinds provider or a tutoring service. For entry requirements and course points, cao.ie is always the authority, and your school remains the place to go for advice about your own subjects and levels.
