Privacy Policy
The app works offline, an account is optional, nothing you type leaves your phone, and no data is ever sold.
Effective date: August 24, 2026
In short: the app works fully offline and keeps your progress on your device. An account is optional. Nothing you type into an answer ever leaves your phone, your card details never reach us, and we never sell data.
1. Who we are
H1 Owl is a study app and website for Leaving Certificate students, run by an independent developer (sole trader, Ireland). For anything about your data or your account: support@h1owl.ie. For media and partnerships: business@h1owl.ie.
2. The website
- Email list: if you sign up on this site, we store your email address with our processor Supabase, on servers in Ireland. It is used to send you H1 Owl updates and occasional study tips. You can request removal at any time by writing to the address above.
- Visit statistics: we use GoatCounter, a counter that uses no cookies, stores no full IP addresses and builds no visitor profiles. We only see aggregate numbers: which page was opened, from which country, with which browser.
- Technical logs: our hosting provider may process standard technical logs (such as IP addresses) needed to serve the site.
3. The app
3.1 On your device
Your answers, your progress, your streak, your settings and your reminder times live on your phone. The app works fully offline. If you never create an account, none of it leaves the device.
3.2 Account (optional)
You can use the whole app without an account. If you create one, with an email address and password or with Sign in with Apple, we store your account id, the name you chose in the app, your progress data, your XP and your streak, so that your progress survives a new phone or a reinstall. This is held by our processor Supabase on servers in Ireland, so it does not leave the European Union. Passwords are handled by Supabase and we never see them.
3.3 Leaderboards and friends (optional)
Leagues are a switch in Settings. While it is on, other users can see the name you chose in the app, your XP for the current week, and your friend code. Turning the switch off removes your row. Your email address is never shown to anyone.
3.4 Subscriptions
Payment runs entirely through the App Store. Your card details never reach us. We use RevenueCat to check whether a subscription is active; it receives your account id, never your email address or your name.
3.5 Usage statistics (you can switch this off)
We use PostHog, on EU servers, to see which screens people open and which features they use, so we can tell what is confusing. Automatic capture and session recording are switched off, so nothing is collected unless we deliberately count it. No event carries your name, your email address, or anything you type into a question. Settings has a switch called Share anonymous usage stats; switching it off really stops the sending, it does not just hide the switch.
3.6 Crash reports
When the app crashes we receive a technical report through Sentry, on EU servers: where in the code it broke, the app version and the platform. Everything else is stripped out before the report is sent, including any user details, network requests and the trail of what you tapped.
3.7 Reminders
Reminders are scheduled by your phone, on your phone. There is no push token and no server involved, so we cannot see whether a reminder arrived or whether you opened it. Nothing is sent between 21:00 and 09:00. Switching reminders off in Settings cancels everything already scheduled.
4. What we never do
- no advertising, no ad trackers, no fingerprinting
- no selling or sharing of personal data
- nothing you type into an answer leaves your device
- no cookies on the website, and so no consent banner, because there is nothing to consent to
5. Children
Ireland's digital age of consent is 16. If you are under 16, please ask a parent or guardian before you create an account or join a league. The app itself works without either.
6. Your rights
Under the GDPR you can ask for access to your data, correction of it, deletion of it, or a copy of it. The fastest route to deletion is inside the app: Settings, Delete account. That removes your account, your row in our database and the data on the device, and it cannot be undone. You can also write to support@h1owl.ie and we will act on it promptly. If you are not happy with how we handled it, you can complain to the Data Protection Commission (dataprotection.ie).
Deleting your account does not cancel a subscription. Subscriptions are managed by Apple and have to be cancelled in the App Store.
7. Who processes data for us
- Supabase, accounts, progress sync and the website email list, on servers in Ireland
- RevenueCat, subscription status only
- PostHog, usage statistics, on EU servers
- Sentry, crash reports, on EU servers
- GoatCounter, website visit counts
- Apple, payments and app distribution
8. Changes
Any change to this policy will be published on this page with a new date.
