How to revise maths: daily habits that actually stick

Everyone knows someone who "did loads of study" and still walked out of a maths exam gutted. Usually the hours were real. The method was the problem: rereading notes, highlighting, copying out formulas, all of which feel like work and store almost nothing. Maths revision has one honest currency, and it is attempted questions. Here is a daily system built on that, small enough to survive a school week.

Rule one: revision means doing

Reading a worked solution and nodding along is recognition, not knowledge. The only way to find out whether you can factorise, differentiate or set up a probability tree is to try one with the notes closed. That feels worse than rereading, because you meet your own gaps immediately. That discomfort is the point: every gap you meet in October is one that cannot ambush you in June.

So the unit of revision is not "an hour on algebra". It is a handful of questions, attempted honestly, checked properly. Which brings us to the second rule.

Little and often beats the marathon

The research on this is unusually clear for education. Studies comparing spaced practice (the same hours spread across days) with massed practice (one long block) find a real, measurable advantage for spacing in maths, and students who cram also tend to overrate how much they know, because everything feels familiar at the end of a long session. Familiar is not the same as retrievable three weeks later.

Twenty minutes a day, six days a week, is roughly two hours of weekly revision that your memory actually keeps. The same two hours on a Sunday evening evaporate by Wednesday. If you are choosing between the two, the boring daily version wins every time, and it is far easier to sit down for twenty minutes than to dread a two hour block.

The 20 minute shape

A daily session needs a fixed shape so you never waste time deciding what to do:

First five minutes: one question from an older topic, from memory. Not the topic you are currently doing in class, one from weeks or months ago. This is the spacing part, and it is the part almost nobody does.

Next ten minutes: three or four questions on your current topic, increasing in difficulty. Past paper parts are ideal once a topic is settled.

Last five minutes: check everything against the marking scheme, not just the final answer. The scheme shows where marks actually live, usually in the method lines you were tempted to skip. Write one sentence in an error log: what went wrong and why. That log becomes gold before the mocks.

Rotate the strands

The Leaving Cert course has five strands, and left to ourselves we all revise the comfortable ones. Fix that mechanically: assign strands to days (algebra Monday, geometry and trig Tuesday, and so on) so the rotation happens without willpower. Your error log will quickly show one strand costing you more marks than the rest; give it two slots a week until that stops.

Where notes and flashcards do fit

Flashcards earn their keep on the small memorisable layer: definitions, the few formulas not in the booklet, trig values, rules for logs and indices. Five minutes of flashcards on the bus is real revision. Just do not let cards become the main event, because maths is a performance subject: the exam tests whether you can do it under a clock, which is also why timed practice has its own rules.

The routine above is deliberately unheroic. Nobody's June result comes from one great study day. It comes from the two hundred small ones before it.

The point (2, 4) lies on the circle x² + y² = 20. The equation of the tangent to the circle at (2, 4) is:

The radius from the centre (0, 0) to (2, 4) has slope 4/2 = 2, and the tangent is perpendicular to the radius, so its slope is -1/2. Then y - 4 = -1/2(x - 2) rearranges to x + 2y - 10 = 0. Option a is the line of the radius itself, not the tangent.

Solve 2cos²x + 3cos x - 2 = 0 for 0° ≤ x ≤ 360°.

Treat it as a quadratic in cos x: (2cos x - 1)(cos x + 2) = 0, so cos x = 1/2 or cos x = -2. Since cos x = -2 is impossible, only cos x = 1/2 remains, giving x = 60° and x = 360° - 60° = 300°. Forgetting the second quadrant-mirror solution gives 60° only.

The line 3x + 4y + k = 0 is a tangent to the circle x² + y² = 4. The possible values of k are:

A line is tangent to a circle when its perpendicular distance from the centre equals the radius. The centre is (0, 0) and r = 2, so |k|/√(3² + 4²) = |k|/5 = 2, giving |k| = 10 and k = ±10. Forgetting that both signs work loses the second tangent on the other side of the circle.

Twenty to thirty focused minutes is enough on school days, more in holidays and before exams. Consistency matters far more than session length.

Is rereading notes completely useless?

Not completely: a quick reread before attempting questions can warm you up. It only fails when it replaces attempting questions, which is where the learning happens.

When should I start daily revision?

Now, whatever the date. The system pays compound interest, so fifth years get the most from it, but even starting after Christmas of sixth year beats cramming in May.
