The Leaving Cert maths syllabus: the five strands explained

Open the official syllabus document and you will find a curriculum written for teachers, not for the person actually sitting the exam. This is the student version. The whole course, Higher and Ordinary alike, is built from five strands, and once you can name them and know roughly what lives inside each one, the subject stops feeling like an endless pile of topics and starts looking like a map.

The five strands at a glance

The strands are Statistics and Probability, Geometry and Trigonometry, Number, Algebra, and Functions. The same five cover both levels; Higher simply goes deeper into each one. The current course grew out of the Project Maths reform and has been examined in this shape for over a decade, so the structure you study this year is the same one your teacher has been marking mocks against for years.

Statistics and Probability is the data strand: collecting it, describing it with averages and spread, reading charts honestly, and working out how likely things are. It rewards careful reading more than clever algebra, which is why many students find it the friendliest place to pick up marks.

Geometry and Trigonometry covers the classic figures and theorems, coordinate geometry of the line and circle, and the sin, cos and tan work that shows up everywhere from triangles to real-world measurement problems.

Number is more than arithmetic. It takes in indices, logs, sequences and series, financial maths like compound interest, and, at Higher Level, proof by induction and complex numbers.

Algebra is the engine room: expressions, factorising, equations of every flavour, inequalities and manipulating formulae. It is less a topic than a language, and every other strand borrows from it constantly.

Functions ties the course together: graphs, transformations, and calculus, meaning differentiation and integration. At Higher Level this strand carries serious weight, and it leans on algebra more than any other.

How the strands map onto the two papers

You sit two written papers, and the split is cleaner than most students realise. Paper 2 draws almost entirely from Statistics and Probability plus Geometry and Trigonometry. Everything else, broadly Algebra, Functions and Number, lands on Paper 1. We have broken down each paper question by question in our Paper 1 guide and our Paper 2 guide.

Each paper has a Section A of concepts and skills and a Section B of longer, context-based questions. Section B is where the syllabus's fondness for real-world settings shows up: a probability question dressed as a game, trigonometry dressed as a building problem. The maths underneath is still the strand you revised; the packaging is the only new part.

Why the strands are not equally important

On paper the five strands look like equal slices. In practice, Algebra and Functions behave like the spine of the course, because weak algebra quietly costs marks in every other strand. A trigonometry question that ends in an equation you cannot solve is lost in the algebra, not in the trigonometry.

That has a practical consequence for revision order. If your basics are shaky, fixing algebra first pays out across the whole exam, which is exactly the approach we recommend in our guide to getting a H1. Statistics and Probability, by contrast, can be revised late and still deliver, because it depends less on everything else.

The syllabus is changing, but not for you yet

One thing worth knowing if you have younger siblings: maths is in tranche 3 of the Senior Cycle redevelopment. A revised specification is due to reach schools in September 2027 for incoming fifth years, which puts the first exam under the new course in 2029. If you are sitting the Leaving Cert in 2027 or 2028, you will be examined on the current syllabus described above, so nothing here changes for you.

Learn the five names, know which paper each strand belongs to, and hang every topic you meet on that frame. The course stops being a blur remarkably quickly once it has a shape.

A study finds a strong positive correlation (r = 0.85) between daily ice cream sales and the number of drowning incidents. The best interpretation is:

Correlation measures association, not causation. Hot weather plausibly increases both swimming (and therefore drownings) and ice cream sales, so a lurking third variable explains the link without either variable causing the other.

A game costs €2 to play. You roll a fair die once and receive €k if you roll a six, and nothing otherwise. For the game to be fair (expected profit zero), k must be:

A fair game means the expected amount received equals the stake: k × 1/6 = 2, so k = 12. Then the expected profit is 12 × 1/6 - 2 = 0. Choosing k = 6 ignores the €2 cost of playing.

Expand: (2x - 3)²

Use (a - b)² = a² - 2ab + b²: (2x)² = 4x², then -2(2x)(3) = -12x, and 3² = 9, giving 4x² - 12x + 9. Writing only 4x² + 9 misses the middle term, the most common squaring error.

Does the 2027 syllabus change affect me?

Not if you sit the exam in 2027 or 2028. The new specification starts with incoming fifth years in September 2027, examined first in 2029.
