Ask students which paper worries them more and the answers split fairly evenly. Paper 1 has calculus and algebra, which people either click with or dread. Paper 2 has a reputation for being the friendlier of the two, and that reputation is exactly what catches people out. It looks approachable at the start and then asks you to think.
Here is what actually sits on Paper 2, where the marks tend to gather, and how to revise it without simply grinding through past papers until your eyes glaze over.
The two strands Paper 2 draws from
The Leaving Cert maths course is built from five strands: Statistics and Probability, Geometry and Trigonometry, Number, Algebra, and Functions. Paper 2 pulls almost entirely from the first two.
Statistics and Probability covers the counting rules, probability of combined events, data presentation, measures of spread, the normal distribution, sampling and, at Higher Level, hypothesis testing and confidence intervals. This is the part of the course that behaves least like the maths you did in Junior Cycle, which is why it rewards students who read the question slowly.
Geometry and Trigonometry covers coordinate geometry of the line and the circle, the theorems and constructions, trigonometric ratios and identities, the sine rule and the cosine rule, and area and volume. Coordinate geometry in particular tends to appear early and reliably.

How the paper is built
Paper 2 runs for two and a half hours and is marked out of 300, the same as Paper 1. It splits into Section A, Concepts and Skills, worth 150 marks, and Section B, Contexts and Applications, also worth 150 marks. You answer everything. There is no choosing the questions you like the look of.
Section A questions tend to be shorter and closer to the textbook. Section B questions wrap the same maths in a real-world scenario, which usually means a page of context to read before you can see what is being asked. Plenty of marks are lost there simply because students start calculating before they have worked out what the question wants.
Where the marks actually gather
Statistics and probability carry serious weight on Paper 2, and at Higher Level the normal distribution and hypothesis testing turn up often enough in the long questions that skipping them is a genuinely bad idea. Students who decide statistics is not their thing tend to leave a lot on the table.
Coordinate geometry is the other dependable earner. The line and the circle are well defined topics with a limited number of question types, which makes them some of the most efficient marks on the whole course to secure. Trigonometry sits behind them, especially the sine and cosine rules, which appear in both sections in different disguises.
None of this means you can safely ignore a topic. The examiners are not obliged to repeat last year, and every year somebody is caught out by exactly the thing they gambled on skipping.
Why Paper 2 punishes reading speed
The most common way to lose marks on Paper 2 is not getting the maths wrong. It is answering a slightly different question than the one on the page. A Section B question might give you three paragraphs about a factory, a sports club or a rainfall dataset, and buried in there is a single word that decides whether you use a sample mean or a population mean.
Slow down at the start of each Section B question. Underline what is being asked. Write down what you have been given before you touch the calculator. Two minutes spent doing that will save you more marks than two extra past papers.
A sensible way to revise it
Work topic by topic rather than paper by paper. Pick coordinate geometry, do questions on it from several years until the patterns are obvious, then move on. Random past papers feel productive but leave your weak topics untouched, because you never spend long enough on any one of them.
Keep the Formulae and Tables booklet open while you practise so that finding things in it becomes automatic rather than a small panic on the day. And be honest about which topics you are avoiding, because that list is usually the one worth working through.
