Leaving Cert maths timing: how long per question

Each Leaving Cert maths paper gives you 2 hours 30 minutes for 300 marks, which works out at 30 seconds per mark. Budget slightly under that, around 12 minutes for a 25 mark question, and you bank 20 to 25 minutes for checking and for the one question that goes wrong.

More points are lost in Leaving Cert maths to the clock than to any topic on the course. Students who could solve question nine never meet it, because question three swallowed twenty minutes it was not worth. The fix is not working faster. It is deciding, before you ever open the paper, what each question is allowed to cost you.

The only sum you need to memorise

Each maths paper runs 2 hours 30 minutes and carries 300 marks, split evenly between Section A, six shorter concepts and skills questions, and Section B, the longer context questions. That is 150 minutes for 300 marks: 30 seconds per mark.

Every question on the paper shows its marks, so every question now has a price tag. A 25 mark question is worth twelve and a half minutes at most. A 10 mark part is worth five. The exact structure and any choice on offer can shift a little from year to year, so read the front cover on the day, but the marks-to-minutes conversion never changes.

In practice you should budget slightly under the rule, closer to 25 seconds per mark. Do that and a full paper costs you about 125 minutes, which banks a buffer of 20 to 25 minutes. That buffer is not slack. It is the most valuable thing you own in that hall, and the whole strategy is about protecting it.

Spend the buffer, never borrow from other questions

The buffer exists for three jobs. First, reading the paper properly at the start instead of diving in blind. Second, the one question that goes wrong on the day, because one always does. Third, checking at the end, which is where silly slips like a dropped minus or a wrong calculator mode get caught. What the buffer is not for is stubbornness. If a question has eaten its budget and you are still stuck, leave a gap, write down anything relevant you know, and move on. Attempt marks in maths are generous to visible method, and the marking scheme cannot reward the twenty minutes you spent staring. Coming back later with fresh eyes rescues more questions than sieging ever does.

Train the clock before June

Timing is a skill, and it only grows under exam conditions. From the mocks onward, every full paper you sit at home should run against a visible timer, with the marks-to-minutes prices written at the top of your page before you start. Two habits are worth drilling deliberately. Practise starting Section B earlier than feels natural, because the long questions punish a tired brain more than the short ones. And practise the act of abandoning a question mid-part, writing a margin note, and returning. It feels terrible the first three times. A simple plan you can carry into the hall

Minute zero to five: read the whole paper, mark the questions that look friendly. Then work Section A, cheapest questions first, at 25 seconds per mark. Reach Section B with at least 75 minutes left. Work it the same way. Final fifteen minutes: return to gaps, then check arithmetic on the questions worth the most. No heroics, no sieges, and the clock stays your tool instead of your enemy.

Frequently asked questions

How long should I spend on a 25 mark question?

Twelve minutes or so, and slightly less if you can manage it. If you are well past that and stuck, bank what you have and move on.

Is it better to do Section A or Section B first?

Most students should take Section A first for confidence and quick marks, but start Section B before fatigue sets in. What matters is deciding your order before the exam, not in it.

What if I finish early?

Check, do not leave. Recompute the arithmetic on the highest mark questions, confirm units and rounding, and reread any part you skimmed. Early finishers who check usually find marks.
