Higher Level
The enrichment of a body of water with nutrients such as nitrates and phosphates, often from fertiliser runoff or sewage. It triggers rapid algal growth that blocks light, and when the algae die the decomposing bacteria use up the dissolved oxygen so fish and other animals die.
